EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the iconic illuminated sign of the Ironmonger Row Baths in Islington, Greater London. The Baths, located at the corner of Ironmonger Row and Norman Street, have a rich history dating back to the 1930s. The building was constructed in two phases by Finsbury Borough Council. The first phase, designed by Alfred William Stephens Cross and Kenneth Mervyn Baskerville Cross, was completed in 1931 and consisted of a laundry and slipper baths. The second phase, designed by K M B Cross, opened in 1938 and included the main pool, children's pool, and Turkish baths. Despite undergoing significant renovations in the early 21st century, which cost £16.5 million, many of the original features of the Baths remain. The building was reopened in 2012 and continues to serve the community as a cherished indoor swimming pool and recreational facility. The Baths are an important piece of local history, reflecting the social and cultural significance of public baths in the UK during the 20th century. The sign, with its bold lettering and simple design, stands as a testament to the enduring allure of this beloved institution.
