The foundation stone of Clapham Baths was laid in September 1930 and the building was formally opened in July 1932. Blue Early 20th Century Indoor Swimming Pool Public Baths Sport And Recreation Swimming Baths

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Clapham Baths, now known as Clapham Leisure Centre, located in Lambeth, Greater London. The image captures the grandeur of this early 20th-century indoor swimming pool from the perspective of the spectators gallery. The historical significance of Clapham Baths is evident through its rich past. Its foundation stone was laid in September 1930 and it was officially opened to the public in July 1932. The baths were not only equipped with a spacious swimming pool but also boasted first and second-class slipper baths for both men and women, along with a laundry facility. However, time took its toll on this architectural gem and around 2010, the original building had to make way for a new leisure center that stands on its hallowed grounds today. In this photograph captured by Simon Inglis for Historic England, we are transported back to an era when public baths served as hubs of sport and recreation for communities across London. The vibrant blue hues dominating the scene evoke a sense of tranquility and invite viewers to imagine themselves taking part in these cherished moments of leisure. While no longer standing physically, Clapham Baths lives on through images like these – preserving memories of a bygone era where people came together to enjoy one another's company while indulging in healthy activities within their local community.
