Diving platform PLA01_09_206
PIONEER HEALTH CENTRE, ST MARY'S ROAD, SOUTHWARK, GREATER LONDON. The diving platform in the swimming pool of the former Pioneer Health Centre, Frobisher Place, seen after the building's conversion into flats.
The Pioneer Health Centre was opened in 1935. It was designed by Sir Owen Williams and was the second centre opened by Dr George Scott Williamson and Dr Innes Pearse, whose focus was prevention rather than cure'. From the 1950s the building was repurposed, including as a college. It was converted into private flats in the late 20th century. The swimming pool is now open to residents only, although access to the diving board has been removed. The building is Grade II* listed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic diving platform PLA01_09_206, located in the former Pioneer Health Centre on St Mary's Road in Southwark, Greater London. Once a bustling hub for health and wellness, this historic building has been transformed into residential flats while preserving its architectural splendor. Originally opened in 1935, the Pioneer Health Centre was designed by renowned architect Sir Owen Williams. Driven by the visionary ideas of Dr George Scott Williamson and Dr Innes Pearse, this center focused on preventive healthcare rather than traditional medical treatments. Over time, the building underwent various transformations and served different purposes including being used as a college. Nowadays, only residents have access to the swimming pool that once housed this magnificent diving board. Although no longer accessible to visitors, its presence is a reminder of an era when social health and well-being were at the forefront of society's concerns. Listed as Grade II*, this remarkable structure stands as a testament to both architectural excellence and historical significance. The image captured by s imon Inglis beautifully captures not just a diving platform but also echoes themes of recreation, sport, exercise, water sports - all elements that contribute to our overall health and welfare. As we admire this photograph print from Historic England's collection, let us appreciate how it encapsulates both past aspirations for better living conditions and present-day efforts to preserve our heritage for future generations.
