EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur and history of Hackney Baths, now known as Kings Hall Leisure Centre, located on Lower Clapton Road in Hackney, Greater London. Originally designed by Edward Harnor and Frederick Pinches and built between 1894-1897, this magnificent building has stood the test of time. The front elevation of the leisure centre showcases its Victorian charm with intricate architectural details. Once a hub for swimming enthusiasts, the main pool was initially designated as a first-class facility for men, also referred to as Kings Pool. Over time, renovations transformed the second-class men's pool into a vibrant dance studio and fitness suite while the ladies' pool became a versatile sports hall. In addition to its pools and recreational spaces, Hackney Baths offered steam baths in the 1930s - an indulgent treat for visitors seeking relaxation. Despite various alterations throughout its existence, many original features have been preserved within these walls. This print is not just an image; it tells a story of community engagement and physical well-being through sport and recreation. The grey hues evoke nostalgia while emphasizing the timeless beauty of this historic landmark. As we admire this snapshot from Historic England's collection by Simon Inglis, we are transported back in time to witness an era when public baths were at their zenith – providing essential services that enriched lives beyond measure.
