EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the vibrant atmosphere of Parliament Hill Fields Lido in Gospel Park, Camden. As people eagerly queue along the south elevation, their anticipation for a refreshing swim is palpable. The main entrance stands proudly at the center, beckoning visitors to indulge in the delights that await within. Designed by Harry Arnold Rowbotham and T. L. Smithson, this iconic outdoor swimming pool opened its doors to the public in 1938 as part of London County Council's ambitious lido project. It quickly became a beloved summer destination for locals and tourists alike. Despite undergoing major refurbishment between 2004-2005, many original features have been meticulously restored or replicated, including the enchanting main clock, nostalgic signage, and mesmerizing aerator fountain. Parliament Hill Fields Lido holds great historical significance as one of only thirteen lidos built during this era. Its Grade II listed status further cements its importance as an architectural gem from the art deco period. In this snapshot frozen in time, we witness not just a physical space but also a representation of joyous moments shared under scorching sun rays during hot summers and heatwaves. Swimmers seeking respite from daily routines find solace here while creating cherished memories with family and friends. Simon Inglis' masterful photography allows us to appreciate both the aesthetic beauty and cultural value embodied by Parliament Hill Fields Lido—a testament to London's rich history of sport and recreation amidst stunning surroundings.
