Tooting Bec Lido, Tooting Bec Road, Streatham, Wandsworth, Greater London. Colourful cubicles on the east side of the pool at Tooting Bec Lido, Streatham, with people swimming in the pool in the foreground.
Tooting Bec Lido is Londons largest and oldest outdoor pool. It was opened in 1906 and was originally known as Tooting Bec Bathing Lake. The pool measures 300 ft by 100 ft, making it twice the length of an Olympic pool and wider than a standard 25m pool is long. It holds one million gallons, and 1, 400 swimmers can be in the water at any one time. A cafe was built in 1936. Renovation to the pool and cafe took place in 1999-2002, with a new paddling pool and entrance block were built, designed by WM Architects

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant print captures the lively atmosphere of Tooting Bec Lido, London's largest and oldest outdoor pool. Located in Streatham, Wandsworth, this historic landmark has been a popular destination for swimmers since its opening in 1906. The image showcases the colorful cubicles on the east side of the pool, adding a playful touch to the scene. In the foreground, we see people joyfully swimming in the crystal-clear water under a scorching summer sun. As one million gallons fill this impressive 300 ft by 100 ft pool – twice as long as an Olympic-sized pool – it becomes evident why up to 1,400 swimmers can enjoy its refreshing waters simultaneously. Tooting Bec Lido holds not only countless memories but also architectural significance. Renovations carried out between 1999 and 2002 included additions such as a new paddling pool and entrance block designed by WM Architects. These improvements have further enhanced visitors' experience while preserving the historical charm that makes Tooting Bec Lido so special. The presence of a café built in 1936 adds convenience for those seeking refreshments after their swim or simply wanting to bask in the sunshine while observing others reveling in this iconic setting. With its vivid colors and bustling energy, this photograph encapsulates all that is cherished about Tooting Bec Lido – from its rich history to its role as a hub for sport and recreation during hot summer days.
