EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the haunting beauty of St George in the East, Stepney, London. Taken in April 1960 by Historic England's Aerofilms Collection, it offers a glimpse into the past and tells a story of resilience and restoration. The image showcases the architectural masterpiece designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, but reveals its tragic history as well. In May 1941, this magnificent church was gutted by an incendiary bomb during World War II. However, hope was not lost for this iconic landmark. Soon after its destruction, plans were set in motion to restore St George in the East within Hawksmoor's original shell. The dedication and determination of countless individuals ensured that this historic gem would rise from the ashes once again. Fast forward to 1964 when St George in the East was rededicated – a momentous occasion that marked triumph over adversity. This photograph immortalizes that pivotal time when faith and community came together to rebuild what had been lost. From an aerial perspective, we witness how this urban sanctuary stands tall amidst its surroundings. Its grandeur is accentuated against a backdrop of bustling streets and buildings - a testament to both its historical significance and enduring presence within Stepney. Thanks to Historic England's preservation efforts through their Aerofilms Collection, we are able to appreciate not only the physical beauty captured in this image but also the rich narrative it holds within its frame.
