1980s Construction Cranes Landscape Shopping Centre Urban

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling construction site of The Lanes Shopping Centre in Carlisle, Cumbria. Taken from a north-east perspective over the Market Place, the image showcases the impressive skyline adorned with towering Laing cranes. Awarded to John Laing Construction, Northern Division in October 1982, this ambitious project took approximately two years to complete. The complex was built using reinforced concrete frames on pile caps and ground beams, featuring a spacious basement area at its lower end. Its unique H type configuration housed four major stores, 50 smaller shopping units, a three-level county library, 27 housing units, offices and even a multi-storey car park. Finally opening its doors on November 19th, 1984, The Lanes Shopping Centre became an iconic addition to Carlisle's urban landscape during the vibrant era of the 1980s. This photograph not only highlights the remarkable architectural feat achieved by John Laing Construction but also serves as a nostalgic reminder of this significant development in Carlisle's history. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection of captivating images from our past, this print offers viewers an intriguing glimpse into both the construction process and final result of one of Cumbria's most notable shopping destinations.
