EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous occasion in the history of The Lanes Shopping Centre, located in Carlisle, Cumbria. In this image, HRH The Duke of Gloucester and the Mayor of Carlisle, councillor Ian Stockdale, along with other esteemed dignitaries, stand proudly beside a plaque that commemorates the official opening ceremony of this iconic shopping destination. The construction of The Lanes Shopping Centre was entrusted to John Laing Construction's Northern Division in October 1982. Over the course of two years, this architectural marvel took shape and became a symbol of progress for the city. Built with reinforced concrete frames on pile caps and ground beams, its unique H type configuration boasted an expansive basement area at its lower end. The grandeur of The Lanes Shopping Centre is evident through its impressive features. It housed four major stores and 50 smaller shopping units to cater to every shopper's needs. Additionally, it offered a three-level county library, 27 housing units, offices for various businesses, and a multi-storey car park. On November 19th, 1984, amidst great anticipation and excitement from both locals and visitors alike, HRH The Duke of Gloucester officially inaugurated The Lanes Shopping Centre. This event marked not only the beginning of a new era for retail in Carlisle but also celebrated the remarkable collaboration between architecture and commerce. This extraordinary photograph serves as a testament to both the historical significance and architectural prowess embodied by The Lanes Shopping Centre
