27 - 28 Greyfriars Lane, Coventry. The front elevation of 27 and 28 Greyfriars Lane and the access to Court 6, showing evidence of bomb damage. Coventry City centre was devastated by air raids in 1940. In this photograph its possible to see part of the timber framed south end of Fords Hospital which, despite suffering a direct hit was restored in 1953. Number 27 & 28 Greyfriars Lane also suffered serious damage and was demolished. The site is now occupied by retirement flats

This print captures the aftermath of the devastating Coventry Blitz during World War II. The image showcases the front elevation of 27 and 28 Greyfriars Lane, as well as the access to Court 6. The visible evidence of bomb damage serves as a haunting reminder of the destruction caused by enemy action. Intriguingly, despite suffering a direct hit, part of the timber-framed south end of Fords Hospital can be seen in this photograph. It is remarkable that this historic building was later restored in 1953, showcasing resilience amidst chaos. However, not all structures were able to withstand such devastation. Number 27 and 28 Greyfriars Lane suffered serious damage and had to be demolished entirely. Today, retirement flats occupy this site where once stood these now lost buildings. The image captured by George Bernard Mason provides a glimpse into the past, offering us an opportunity to reflect on the horrors faced by Coventry City Centre during those dark days in 1940. It stands as a testament to both human endurance and our ongoing commitment to remember history's lessons learned from war's destructive forces.
