EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing beauty of Embankment Place, a remarkable development in the heart of Westminster, London. Taken at dusk from across the Thames, the image showcases the completed project in all its glory. In 1987, Laing Management Contracting was awarded the prestigious contract to construct Embankment Place over Charing Cross Station. While primarily an office building, this ambitious undertaking also included shopping facilities, restoration work on the Players Theatre, and enhancements to the station itself. British Rail collaborated closely with Laing throughout this endeavor. The site's completion in 1991 marked a significant milestone for architectural excellence and urban transformation. Recognized for its outstanding design and structural ingenuity, Embankment Place received accolades such as the Civic Trust Award and European Structural Steel Design Award. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are transported back to a bygone era when bustling cityscapes came alive under nightfall. The river reflects shimmering lights that dance upon its surface while casting an atmospheric glow on this iconic structure. Through A© Historic England Archive's lens, we can appreciate both the historical significance and aesthetic allure of Embankment Place during its heyday in the 1990s. This image serves as a testament to human innovation and creativity that continues to shape our urban landscapes today.
