Trinity House plaster work a41_00048

TRINITY HOUSE, TRINITY HOUSE LANE, CITY OF KINGSTON UPON HULL. A detailed view of plaster wall panels and coving in the Court Room in Trinity House, photographed in 1941. The walls of the room have raised plaster panels and elaborate coving with plaster swags and paintings of mythical beasts: in the image are two hippocampi, or sea-horses, either side of an emblem with an anchor. The court room is part of Trinity House, consisting of offices and houses in a polygonal plan around two interior courtyards. The main block dates to 1753 and the Guild House is c1775, with the remaining buildings constructed in the 18th and 19th centuries

Georgian House Office Court Room Guildhall

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by George Bernard Wood in 1941, showcases the exquisite plaster work found in the Court Room of Trinity House in Kingston upon Hull. The attention to detail is simply breathtaking. The image transports us back to a time when craftsmanship was revered, as we are presented with a close-up view of the intricately designed plaster wall panels and coving. Each element tells its own story, adding an air of grandeur and sophistication to the room. The raised plaster panels on the walls feature delicate swags and mythical beasts that seem to come alive before our eyes. Two magnificent hippocampi, or sea-horses, gracefully flank an emblem adorned with an anchor symbolizing stability and strength. Trinity House itself is a remarkable architectural gem consisting of offices and houses arranged in a polygonal plan around two interior courtyards. The main block dates back to 1753 while the Guild House was constructed around 1775. Additional buildings were added during the 18th and 19th centuries. Wood's photograph not only captures this stunning example of Georgian design but also serves as a testament to preserving history for future generations. It allows us to appreciate the skillful artistry that went into creating such masterpieces within Trinity House's Court Room - truly a sight worth beholding.
