EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment frozen in time, showcasing the magnificent steamers at Southsea's Clarence Pier in Portsmouth, Hampshire. Taken in 1939 by the renowned Aerofilms Co. , this aerial shot showcases two iconic paddle steamers - The Solent Queen and Gracie Fields. Little did anyone know that these vessels would play a significant role in history just one year later. In 1940, both of these majestic ships were called upon to serve their country during the evacuation of Dunkirk. The HMS Gracie Fields valiantly sailed into treacherous waters only to meet its tragic fate beneath the waves. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during those tumultuous times. The image itself is breathtaking; it beautifully captures the bustling pier against a backdrop of serene coast and sea. The paddle steamer's intricate details are visible from above, highlighting their grandeur and elegance. It transports us back to an era when such vessels were not merely modes of transportation but symbols of adventure and exploration. Thanks to Historic England's preservation efforts, we can now relish this snapshot from our past. As we gaze upon this extraordinary piece of history, let us remember those who bravely served on board these steamers and honor their memory forever etched within this remarkable photograph.
