EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling streets of Shrewsbury, Shropshire in 1922. The Square CC76_00228 captures a vibrant scene from the east, showcasing an era where horse-drawn carriages were gradually being replaced by automobiles. In this snapshot of history, we are greeted with a sight that perfectly encapsulates the transition between old and new. The focal point of the image is undoubtedly the Lord Clive Monument standing tall at the center of The Square. Majestic and commanding attention, it serves as a reminder of Shrewsbury's rich heritage. Flanking either side are two parked cars, symbols of progress and modernity amidst traditional architecture. As our eyes wander further into the frame, we notice another vehicle discreetly positioned behind these pioneering machines. This trio represents not only transportation advancements but also hints at how society was adapting to changing times. The market hall stands proudly in the background, its presence adding depth to this lively tableau. It is fascinating to observe people going about their daily lives against this backdrop; some leisurely strolling while others appear engrossed in conversation or perhaps contemplating their next purchase. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this photograph offers us a glimpse into an era long gone but forever imprinted on film. It invites us to reflect upon how far we have come while cherishing our shared past.
