London Bridge JLP01_10_21813
London Bridge City, Southwark, Greater London. Looking south-east over London Bridge and the Thames towards the London Bridge City complex, showing No.1 London Bridge on the right.
Various buildings within this complex of offices, flats and shops on Tooley Street in London Bridge City were built by Laing Management Contracting for the St Martins Group who redeveloped the former Hays Wharf site on the south bank of the River Thames. The redevelopment of the site took place over 2 1/2 years between 1985-1988 and included No.1 London Bridge, Cottons, Hays Galleria and 29-33 Tooley Street. At the time, it was the biggest building contract in London and was one of the largest construction projects in the country

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic London Bridge and the bustling cityscape of Southwark, Greater London. Looking south-east over the Thames, one can admire the impressive London Bridge City complex, with No. 1 London Bridge standing proudly on the right. The buildings within this complex tell a story of transformation and redevelopment. Laing Management Contracting worked tirelessly for 2 1/2 years between 1985-1988 to construct various offices, flats, and shops on Tooley Street in what was once Hays Wharf. The St Martins Group spearheaded this ambitious project that included notable structures such as Cottons, Hays Galleria, and 29-33 Tooley Street. This endeavor marked not only the largest building contract in London at that time but also one of the country's most significant construction projects. As we gaze upon this image frozen in time from the 1980s, we are reminded of both progress and history intertwining harmoniously. The red double-decker buses traversing across London Bridge symbolize road transport's enduring presence amidst urban development. This remarkable photograph is a testament to human ingenuity and serves as a visual reminder of how cities evolve over time while preserving their heritage. It is an invaluable addition to Historic England Archive's collection by A© Joh. "
