EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures a moment frozen in time, showcasing the early days of Stevenage New Town. Taken between 1957 and 1965 by G L Blake, it offers a glimpse into the urban development that transformed this area of Hertfordshire. The focal point of the image is the Six Hills Roundabout, with its intricate network of cycle and pedestrian paths nestled beneath the carriageway. The viewer's gaze is drawn towards this bustling intersection, where people can be seen going about their daily lives amidst the backdrop of progress. In the left background, we catch a glimpse of Six Hills Way crossing over the main railway line - a testament to Stevenage's connectivity and accessibility during its formative years as a new town. This juxtaposition between modern infrastructure and traditional transportation systems adds depth to the photograph, highlighting both continuity and change. Stevenage was designated as Britain's first new town on November 11th, 1946 - an ambitious project aimed at addressing post-war housing shortages. By 1952, residents began moving into their brand-new homes within this planned community. G L Blake's expertly captured snapshot serves as a visual reminder of Stevenage's pioneering spirit during these transformative years. It invites us to reflect upon how far this vibrant town has come since its humble beginnings while appreciating its rich history preserved through photographs like these from Historic England.
