Barnhurst Farm a42_03204

Barnhurst Farm, Pendeford, City of Wolverhampton. Barnhurst Farm seen from the west, framed by gate piers. In 1867 Wolverhampton Corporation purchased the Banhurst estate and built a sewerage farm on some of land. The farmhouse shown here survived until 1963 when it was demolished to make way for a housing estate. The 17th century dovecote was saved and gave its name to the surrounding housing development

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Barnhurst Farm, nestled in the picturesque Pendeford area of Wolverhampton. The farm, dating back to the 17th century, stands proudly as a testament to the region's rich agricultural heritage. In this particular shot taken in the 1940s by G B Mason, we are presented with a view from the west, where Barnhurst Farm is beautifully framed by majestic gate piers. These gate piers not only add an architectural charm but also serve as a gateway into history. Interestingly, in 1867 Wolverhampton Corporation acquired the Banhurst estate and utilized part of its land to construct a sewerage farm. Unfortunately, this led to the demolition of the farmhouse depicted here in 1963 when it made way for a housing estate. However, one piece of history was salvaged -the remarkable 17th-century dovecote that stood on these grounds. Its significance was so profound that it lent its name to the surrounding housing development. As we gaze upon this image today, we can't help but appreciate how time has shaped our landscapes and communities. This print serves as both a reminder of what once was and an invitation to explore our local histories further.
