EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Historic England Archive takes us back to the 1880s, capturing the essence of Springfield Brewery in Wolverhampton. The image showcases a general view of the brewery, with its impressive architecture and bustling yard. Standing tall against the backdrop of Cambridge Street, this historic landmark was built in 1873 for William Butler. The photographer, R Sinclair, skillfully frames the scene from the smithy's perspective, allowing us to glimpse into daily life at Springfield Brewery. The hustle and bustle of workers going about their tasks can almost be heard through this timeless image. Sadly, time has taken its toll on this once-thriving establishment. After serving as a hub for brewing excellence for over a century, Springfield Brewery closed its doors in 1991. Tragically, it suffered further devastation when fire ravaged parts of the building in 2004. Nevertheless, this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of an era gone by – an era when breweries like Springfield were at the heart of communities across Britain. It is a testament to our industrial heritage and reminds us that even though buildings may crumble and industries change, their memories are forever preserved through images like these. Thanks to Historic England Archive's dedication to preserving our past through photography prints such as this one, we can continue to appreciate and learn from these historical gems long after they have faded away from our physical landscape.
