Frozen Thames OFH01_01_01_f01_06
Old Putney Bridge, Putney, Wandsworth, Greater London. The view from Putney showing the old Putney Bridge crossing the frozen River Thames, during the winter of 1881, with the Fulham foreshore in the background.
In January 1881 a low pressure system brought some of the most severe blizzards and freezing temperatures to southern parts of the United Kingdom. The effects of this weather can be seen in this view of Putney Bridge, also known as Fulham Bridge.
The bridge was badly damaged by a river barge in 1870. It was repaired but its days were numbered and in 1880 work began on a replacement. Shortly after completion of the new crossing in 1886, the old bridge, seen here, was demolished

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a frozen moment in time on the historic River Thames. Taken during the harsh winter of 1881, it showcases the old Putney Bridge standing proudly amidst a frozen landscape. The view from Putney offers a glimpse into the past, with the Fulham foreshore serving as an enchanting backdrop. In January of that year, southern parts of the United Kingdom experienced some of the most severe blizzards and freezing temperatures ever recorded. This image perfectly encapsulates the perishing cold and bitter weather conditions that gripped London during this period. The bridge itself had already endured its fair share of challenges prior to this photograph being taken. Damaged by a river barge in 1870, it was repaired but ultimately replaced in 1886 due to its deteriorating state. This print immortalizes its final years before demolition. Photographer William O Field skillfully captured not only a historical landmark but also an atmospheric winterscape filled with icy wonder. The Georgian architecture adds an elegant touch to this scene, reminding us of London's rich architectural heritage. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back to a time when nature's forces transformed familiar landscapes into extraordinary sights. It serves as both a reminder of our vulnerability to Mother Nature's whims and a testament to human resilience in overcoming adversity.
