EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the summer of 1919, capturing a moment in time at the Palace Pier in St Leonards on Sea, Hastings. As the sun shines brightly overhead, holidaymakers can be seen basking in its warmth while delighting in the lively atmosphere created by a band playing on the nearby bandstand. The pier itself stands proudly against the picturesque backdrop of East Sussex's coastline. Completed in 1891, this iconic structure provided endless entertainment for locals and tourists alike. However, it met an unfortunate fate when rough weather took its toll, leading to its demolition in 1951. Yet through this photograph by Henry Bedford Lemere, we are able to glimpse into a bygone era where joyous laughter and carefree moments were shared under sunny skies. The image captures not only leisurely activities but also serves as a testament to architectural heritage. It reminds us of how places like these have shaped our cultural identity over time. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this print allows us to appreciate both the beauty of nature and human ingenuity that once graced our shores. As we gaze upon this historical snapshot frozen forever within silver halides, let us cherish those fleeting memories from summers past and celebrate their enduring legacy today
