1960s Childhood Laing Spirit Sport And Recreation Women Fancy Dress Costume Space Travel

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a heartwarming moment at the annual Laing sports day in Elstree, Greater London. The image showcases a young girl adorned in an exquisite fancy dress costume, portraying none other than the legendary cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova. Standing tall with pride, she is seen receiving a well-deserved prize from Hilda Laing herself. The year was 1964, just days after Valentina Tereshkova made history as the first woman to journey into space. The excitement surrounding this monumental achievement resonated even at this local event. Laings' Sports Day brought together employees and their families for a day filled with friendly competition and joyous celebration. The photo not only reflects the spirit of childhood innocence but also highlights women's growing presence in traditionally male-dominated fields such as space exploration. It serves as a reminder that dreams have no boundaries, inspiring generations to reach for the stars. Published in Team Spirit, the employee newsletter of Laing company, this snapshot immortalizes a cherished memory within both personal and historical contexts. It symbolizes how sport and recreation can unite communities while capturing significant moments that transcend time. Through this single frame frozen in time by Historic England Archive, we are transported back to an era where imagination soared alongside rockets and little girls could dream of becoming pioneers themselves.
