Shop Stuart Town House Jettied

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back in time to the early 20th century, capturing the essence of a bustling street scene in Gloucester, Gloucestershire. The focus of this image is the Chemist shop CC53 / 00069 located at 103 Westgate Street, which was once known as Bishop Hooper Pharmacy. The building itself is a remarkable example of a town house dating back to around 1645. Its distinctive Stuart architecture stands out with its jettied upper floors, showcasing an architectural style that was popular during that era. This charming structure later became part of the renowned Gloucester Folk Museum after being acquired by the City Council. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we are transported into an era where horse-drawn carriages lined these cobbled streets and people strolled along adorned with elegant attire. The storefront displays various products and remedies typical for a chemist shop during those times. Photographer Sydney Pitcher has skillfully captured not only the physical beauty of this historic building but also its significance within the community it served. This photograph serves as a reminder of our rich heritage and how even everyday places like pharmacies can hold immense historical value. It is through images like these that we can appreciate our past while simultaneously marveling at how much has changed over time.
