EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the charming streets of Sherborne in 1939. The image showcases a bustling scene on Half Moon Street, where locals are seen going about their daily activities. In the foreground, an elegant car is parked outside F W Pedley's shop, a renowned draper and outfitter at the time. The shop's signage proudly displays its name, inviting passersby to explore its offerings. Adjacent to it stands a gas lamp, casting a warm glow over the street as dusk approaches. The building itself is an architectural gem from the Tudor era, constructed in the 1530s. It boasts intricate details that reflect its historical significance and charm. Originally serving as Church House with a hall on the first floor for religious gatherings, it has since been repurposed into shops on its ground level. This photograph captures not only a moment frozen in time but also offers glimpses into everyday life during this period of history. It allows us to appreciate both the timeless beauty of Sherborne's architecture and how people interacted with their surroundings nearly eight decades ago. Preserved by C R Wrigley and now held within Historic England's archives, this image serves as a valuable record of Sherborne's past for future generations to admire and learn from.
