EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the early 1900s, capturing a charming window display at Plummer and Roddis Ltd Department Store in Southampton. The shop front stands proudly on Above Bar Street, exuding an air of elegance and sophistication. In this snapshot of history, two men can be seen standing by the shop window, seemingly captivated by the mesmerizing display before them. The focal point of this enchanting scene is undoubtedly the array of handkerchiefs showcased within the window. Amongst them, a remarkable creation catches our eye - a tram ingeniously crafted entirely out of delicate handkerchiefs. This whimsical touch adds an element of playfulness to the otherwise refined setting. The attention to detail is evident as we observe every aspect captured within this frame; from the meticulously arranged handkerchiefs to the carefully chosen merchandise surrounding them. It's clear that Plummer and Roddis spared no effort in creating an enticing shopping experience for their customers. As we delve into this image from Historic England Archive, it transports us back to a time when department stores were not just places for commerce but also showcases for artistry and creativity. Step ladders are strategically placed nearby, suggesting ongoing efforts to perfect every last detail. This photograph serves as a visual reminder that even everyday objects like handkerchiefs can become works of art when presented with imagination and flair.
