WD AND HO WILLS, WHITCHURCH LANE, CITY OF BRISTOL. The management team for the Wills tobacco factory construction at Hartcliffe, Bristol, scrutinising site plans.
The Hartcliffe project was Laings Building Divisions first management contract, a new venture in the companys construction policy. The Laing labour force was not used, instead the various aspects of construction at the site were subcontracted to other companies. Blackwells undertook the earth works and landscaping, Wimpey the foundations, roads and sewers, McAlpine built the main concrete structures and Bolton and Paul the steelwork whilst Drake and Scull were responsible for the building services installation. The Laing management team coordinated the different aspects of construction and liaised with the architects and engineers to deliver the £ 15m contract

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the dedicated management team of the Wills tobacco factory construction project in Hartcliffe, Bristol. With intense focus, they meticulously scrutinize site plans, ensuring every detail is accounted for. The Hartcliffe project marked a significant milestone for Laings Building Division as it ventured into its first management contract. Departing from their usual practice, Laing opted to subcontract various aspects of construction to specialized companies rather than utilizing their own labor force. Blackwells took charge of earthworks and landscaping while Wimpey handled foundations, roads, and sewers. McAlpine expertly constructed the main concrete structures, Bolton and Paul skillfully executed the steelwork, and Drake and Scull were responsible for building services installation. The seamless coordination between these subcontractors was overseen by the diligent Laing management team who worked closely with architects and engineers to successfully deliver this £15 million contract. This photograph not only showcases the individuals behind this monumental project but also highlights their unwavering commitment to excellence in construction. It serves as a testament to their collective expertise and dedication that brought this state-of-the-art tobacco factory to life in Whitchurch Lane, City of Bristol. A remarkable piece of history captured by A© Historic England Archive; it stands as a reminder of the immense effort required in creating such iconic landmarks within our industrial landscape.
