EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases an artist's gridded sketch of Senenmut, a prominent figure during the New Kingdom Dynasty 18 in ancient Egypt. Created around 1479-1458 B. C. , this remarkable piece was discovered in Upper Egypt, specifically at Sheikh Abd el-Qurna near Thebes. The image depicts a man wearing a short wig, undoubtedly representing Hatshepsut, one of the most influential pharaohs of her time. Senenmut held various esteemed positions under her reign and was valued for his appointment to numerous important offices, including steward of the god Amun at Karnak. The significance of this artwork lies not only in its historical context but also in its connection to Senenmut's ability to afford such an elaborate funerary complex. This complex consisted of an offering chapel and tomb numbered TT 71, which is located far from the renowned temple Deir el-Bahri in western Thebes. Measuring approximately 22.5 cm (8 7/8 inches) high by 18 cm (7 1/16 inches) wide with a thickness of about 3.3 cm (1 3/8 inches), this limestone sketch is meticulously gridded for precision and detail. As we admire this print, we are transported back thousands of years into ancient Egyptian history—a testament to the enduring legacy left behind by individuals like Senenmut and their contributions to art and culture during that era.
