EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Birth of Bacchus" we are transported back in time to witness a mythological tale come to life. The artwork, created by Pieter Serwouters and Jacob Matham between 1616 and 1657, depicts the extraordinary birth of Bacchus. As the story goes, Bacchus was born from Jupiter's thigh after his mother Semele had been consumed by Jupiter's lightning. In this image, we see Semele transformed into an old woman named Beroe, while Jupiter appears in all his divine splendor with a crown adorning his head. An eagle, symbolizing one of Jupiter's attributes, runs alongside him as he carries the newborn Bacchus. The scene is filled with emotion and suffering as Semele had been tempted to ask for proof of her lover's divinity before giving birth. This request ultimately led to her tragic demise but also brought forth the miraculous birth of Bacchus. Through Quint Lox's lens and the Liszt Collection archives, we can now appreciate every intricate detail captured in this remarkable piece of art history. It serves as a reminder that even amidst misfortune and tragedy, beauty can emerge – just like young Bacchus himself.
