This vessel shows only about sixteen inches above water. Her tower revolves by means of a small engine, and its weight rests on the central shaft, the lower portion of which bears on the keelsons. During action all apertures are shut, ventilation being kept up by two fans, which draw in air from the top of the tower, and the boiler-furnace carries out all foul air. In case of the enemy boarding, the guns may be brought to bear on deck, and hand-grenades thrown from the top of the turret. In the engagement at Charleston the Weehawken acted as pioneer, having attached to her bow an Ericsson raft, intended to lift or explode submarine torpedoes. During the night following the bombardment she lost her raft, which was washed ashore on Morris Island, and taken possession of by the enemy

This print from the Liszt Collection showcases "The Civil War In America, The U. S. Gun-Boat Weehawken" one of the nine ironclads that played a crucial role in the bombardment of Charleston on 2 May 1863. Despite its massive size, only about sixteen inches of this formidable vessel can be seen above water. The tower of the gun-boat is equipped with a small engine that allows it to revolve, while its weight rests on a central shaft supported by keelsons. During combat, all openings are sealed shut, and ventilation is maintained through two fans drawing air from the top of the tower. To counter enemy boarding attempts, the guns can be directed towards the deck while hand-grenades are launched from atop the turret. Notably, during the engagement at Charleston, Weehawken served as a pioneer ship by attaching an Ericsson raft to her bow. This innovative device was designed to detect and neutralize submarine torpedoes. Following intense bombardment throughout that fateful night in Charleston, Weehawken unfortunately lost her valuable raft which washed ashore on Morris Island and fell into enemy hands. This photograph captures both the impressive power and vulnerability of these ironclad warships during their critical involvement in one of America's most defining conflicts – The Civil War.
