The scene depicts a chaotic and intense moment as the village is engulfed in flames and farmers clash with soldiers. At the center of the image stands the farmer captain, his determination evident on his face, ready to defend his people against the invading soldiers. However, he is prevented from engaging in battle by a dominating woman, possibly his wife. Her firm grip on his arm signifies her desire for him to prioritize their safety over personal vengeance. The village has been raided and plundered by these ragged soldiers who have left destruction in their wake. A distressed child clings onto one of the women nearby, seeking comfort amidst chaos. This particular artwork was created by Floris Balthasarsz van Berckenrode during that time period but was later reproduced by Johannes Covens and Cornelis Mortier between 1720-1772. It bears Van Berckenrode's signature at its bottom corner.
