EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning model water lily from the Middle Kingdom, Late Dynasty 11 in ancient Egypt. Dating back to approximately 2051-1981 B. C. , this exquisite piece was discovered in Upper Egypt, specifically at Deir el-Bahri Temple in Thebes. Crafted with painted and plastered wood, this delicate representation of a water lily measures about 3 1/8 inches (8 cm) in height. Water lilies, commonly known as lotus flowers, were ubiquitous plants that held great symbolic significance in ancient Egyptian culture. The vibrant blue and white petals of the Nymphaea coerulea alba variety beautifully adorn this model. Interestingly, like its real-life counterpart, this flower closes up during the night only to reopen each morning. As it unfurls its petals once again, a central yellow circle surrounded by radiating yellow petals is revealed. This particular artifact was found within Pit 5 of the North Triangular Court at Deir el-Bahri Temple during excavations conducted between 1922 and 1923. It serves as a remarkable testament to the artistic prowess and attention to detail exhibited by craftsmen during that era. With its intricate design and rich historical context, this print offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate both the natural beauty of water lilies and their enduring significance throughout ancient history.
