EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enchanting combination of Pepper (Piper nigrum) and Peony (Paeonia), two exquisite botanical specimens. The image, part of a hand-numbered sheet labeled 14, is derived from Anselmi Boetii de Boot I. C. Brugensis & Rodolphi II's renowned collection titled "Imp. Novel. medici a cubiculis Florum, Herbarum, ac fructuum selectiorum icones, & vires pleraeque hactenus ignotae". This particular album dates back to 1640 and originates from the Southern Netherlands. The composition features delicate watercolor paintings depicting Pepper and Peony plants alongside intricate engravings of various birds. Notably, one can spot a charming bird nestled within the branches of the pepper bush in Figs. 27 and 28. Commissioned by Emperor Rudolf II around 1600, these twelve albums were created as an homage to nature's wonders during that era. Each plate was meticulously crafted on paper using ink and watercolor paint techniques. This specific print measures approximately 135 mm in height by 205 mm in width for the main composition and expands to about 160 mm by 230 mm when considering its surrounding border. The Liszt Collection proudly preserves this historical gem as part of their extensive compilation featuring extraordinary artworks spanning centuries.
