EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection transports us back in time to witness a magnificent pageant on the River Arno in Florence. Plate 2 showcases the grandeur of the event, with Argonaut Amphion leading Mercury and Anfione Argon. The prow of their vessel is adorned with a fantastic beast head, symbolizing power and mystique. Amphion, seated regally at the stern, exudes authority as he guides this majestic procession. The series captures the essence of a wedding celebration for Cosimo de Medici, known as "Le Magnifique". It was an extravagant affair that took place between 1608 and 1664. The etching by Remigio Cantagallina beautifully depicts every intricate detail of this historical event. The sheet measures approximately 3 11/16 x 5 1/4 inches (9.4 x 13.4 cm), allowing us to appreciate its fine craftsmanship up close. As we gaze upon this remarkable artwork, we are transported to an era filled with opulence and splendor. It serves as a testament to the artistic talent of Borgo Sansepolcro's own Remigio Cantagallina, who lived from ca. 1582-1656.
