This print showcases the intricate artwork titled "Study Male Figure Lowered Grave recto Kneeling Female Figure" by Artokoloro. The image captures a profound moment of contemplation and grief, as depicted through the skillful brushstrokes and delicate use of blue wash highlighted with white. Created between 1607 and 1613 by Italian artist Ludovico Cardi, also known as Cigoli, this drawing measures approximately 9 13/16 x 15 3/8 inches (24.9 x 39.1 cm) on paper. The composition features a male figure in profile, lowered over a grave on the front side (recto), while on the reverse side (verso), a kneeling female figure is portrayed. The figures were meticulously studied by Cigoli for his larger painting commissioned in 1606-1607 at Basilica San Paolo Fuori le Mura in Rome. Unfortunately, due to an unfortunate destructive fire that occurred in1823, the painting remained unfinished. Despite its incomplete state, this study offers viewers a glimpse into Cigoli's artistic process and mastery of capturing human emotions within his work. The attention to detail is evident in every stroke of black chalk used to outline the figures' forms. Now preserved within Castello di Cigoli, this remarkable piece serves as a testament to both Cigoli's talent and the enduring power of art to evoke deep emotional responses from its audience.
