1602 1690 Cistercians Member Order Aisa Francisca

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Ana Francisca de Abarca y Bolea (1602-1690), a Spanish Cistercian nun and prolific writer. Born in Valencia, Spain, Ana Francisca entered the Cistercian convent of Santa Cruz la Real de la Sal in 1619, where she spent the rest of her life dedicated to prayer, contemplation, and literary pursuits. Ana Francisca's literary output was vast and varied, encompassing spiritual writings, poetry, and letters. Her most famous work, "Cartas Marruecas," or "Moroccan Letters," is a series of letters written to a spiritual director while she was living in a Moroccan convent during the late 1640s. These letters offer a unique perspective on life in a foreign land, as well as insights into Ana Francisca's deep spirituality and her ability to find God in all aspects of her surroundings. Despite her many literary accomplishments, Ana Francisca remained a humble and devout nun, always placing her religious duties above her writing. Her writings were not published during her lifetime, but were discovered and published posthumously, bringing her fame and recognition as a significant figure in Spanish literature and spirituality. This photograph, with its hauntingly beautiful composition and striking contrasts, serves as a fitting tribute to Ana Francisca de Abarca y Bolea, a woman who dedicated her life to God and left behind a rich literary legacy that continues to inspire and captivate readers to this day.
