Adam Duncan, 1st Viscount Duncan (1731-1804), was a distinguished British naval commander, best known for his victory at the Battle of Camperdown in 1797. Born in Scotland as Adam Duncan, he joined the Royal Navy at a young age and rose through the ranks with remarkable speed, earning a reputation as a brave and capable seaman. In 1797, Duncan was appointed commander-in-chief of the British fleet in the North Sea. Faced with a formidable Dutch fleet under Vice Admiral Jan de Winter, Duncan devised a daring plan to attack the enemy in the shallow waters of the Scheldt estuary. The Battle of Camperdown, fought on October 11, 1797, was a hard-fought engagement, with both sides suffering heavy losses. However, Duncan's tactical brilliance and determination proved decisive, and the Dutch fleet was defeated, securing British dominance of the North Sea.
