Adelaida de Saboya, also known as Jeanne de Saboya or Jeanne de Montferrat, was a 15th century duchess and a renowned manuscript illuminator from the House of Savoy. Born in 1401 in Burgundy, Adelaida was the daughter of Thomas, Count of Savoy, and his second wife, Marguerite of Burgundy. She was educated in the arts and became a skilled painter and illuminator, producing exquisite works in the Gothic style. This miniature painting, created by Adelaida de Saboya around the month of August in the 15th century, is a testament to her artistic prowess. Depicted here, Adelaida has masterfully captured the essence of the month of August with its abundant harvests. The painting features a vertical composition, with barrels stacked high in the foreground, symbolizing the bountiful grape harvest. In the background, we see a castle and a village, surrounded by lush greenery and a clear, blue sky.
