EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking vertical litography depicts Dionisio Alcala Galiano y Alcala (1760-1805), a prominent Spanish naval officer, cartographer, and explorer. Born in Spain, Alcala Galiano began his naval career at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a captain in the Spanish Navy by the age of 30. In 1793, Alcala Galiano embarked on an expedition led by Alejandro Malaspina, another renowned Spanish explorer, to explore the Pacific Ocean and chart its waters. Their voyage, known as the Malaspina Expedition, was one of the most comprehensive explorations of the Pacific at the time and resulted in the production of detailed maps and charts that were essential for navigation and trade. Alcala Galiano's cartographic skills were put to the test during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, where he served as the captain of the Spanish frigate "Santa Maria de Galantes." Despite being outnumbered and outgunned by the British fleet, Alcala Galiano skillfully maneuvered his ship and managed to escape, saving many Spanish lives. This portrait, created through the lithographic process, captures Alcala Galiano's intense gaze and the seriousness of his demeanor. The image, with its intricate details and shading, is a testament to the skill of the lithographer. The portrait is a significant historical document, not only for its depiction of a key figure in Spanish naval history but also for its artistic merit as a work of lithography.
