1865 Algernon Aristocracy Aristocrat Baron Bertram Collector Diplomat Freeman Grandfather Mitford Notorious Paternal Redesdale Sisters Upper

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking portrait photograph, taken in 1865, we see Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford, 1st Baron Redesdale, at the age of 28. The young aristocrat, who would later become a prominent British diplomat, collector, and writer, is captured in an elegant and refined pose, embodying the upper-class sensibilities of Victorian England. Born into the aristocratic Mitford family on July 26, 1837, Algernon's lineage can be traced back to the Norman Conquest. His paternal grandchildren, the infamous Mitford sisters, would later make headlines for their scandalous lives and controversial political beliefs. At the time of this photograph, Algernon was already making a name for himself in diplomatic circles. He had been appointed as the British Vice-Consul in Marseilles, France, in 1862, and would go on to serve as the British Minister to the Ottoman Porte in Constantinople from 1877 to 1880. In addition to his diplomatic pursuits, Algernon was an avid collector of art and antiquities. He amassed a significant collection of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures, which he displayed in his London home, Asthall Manor. As a writer, Algernon contributed to various publications, including the Quarterly Review and the Fortnightly Review. He also authored several books, including "A Diplomatist's Recollections" and "A Winter in the East." This portrait captures Algernon at the cusp of his illustrious career, showcasing the poise, intelligence, and sophistication of a man who would go on to leave an indelible mark on British society.
