1636 Alice Brackley Countess Derby Ferdinando Spencer Subsequently Viscount

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant portrait, Alice Spencer, Countess of Derby, is depicted in the prime of her youth and beauty. Born in the late 16th century as the eldest daughter of the powerful Earl of Marlborough, Alice's marriage to Ferdinando, the 5th Earl of Derby, was a significant political alliance. The Spencer and Cavendish families were two of the most influential in English society, and their union strengthened the power base of both. Alice's first marriage to Ferdinando, Earl of Derby, took place in 1604, and they had several children together. Tragically, Ferdinando died in 1616, leaving Alice a widow at a relatively young age. In 1622, Alice married again, this time to Thomas Percy, Viscount Brackley, and they had a son together. This portrait, likely painted between 1625 and 1630, captures Alice's refined beauty and poise. She wears an intricately embroidered gown, adorned with pearls and lace, and her long, dark hair is styled in elaborate curls. The artist has skillfully captured the subtle play of light and shadow on Alice's face, highlighting her delicate features and expressive eyes. Alice's life was marked by tragedy and political intrigue. Her first husband's death left her a wealthy widow, and she was involved in a bitter dispute with her late husband's family over the guardianship of her children. Her second marriage to Viscount Brackley was also fraught with difficulties, and they were eventually separated. Alice died in 1636, leaving behind a complex and fascinating legacy. This portrait is a testament to Alice's beauty and the social and political significance of her life. It offers a glimpse into the world of the English aristocracy in the early 17th century, a time of intrigue, power, and opulence.
