EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from the esteemed "Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles" published between 1816 and 1830, showcases two fascinating aquatic species native to Argentina: the Argentine Sphyraena (Sphyraena argentina) and the Lake Trout (Salmo trutta). The illustration, created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), was meticulously engraved by Massard under the direction of Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, later became an artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. In this illustration, Pretre masterfully captures the intricate details and vibrant colors of these two remarkable fish species. The Argentine Sphyraena, also known as the Argentine Jack or Silver Jack, is a large, powerful fish with a metallic silver body and distinctive black spots along its sides. A common inhabitant of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Argentina, this predatory fish is an essential component of the marine ecosystem. The Lake Trout, or Salvelinus fontinalis, is a freshwater fish native to the northern hemisphere, including Argentina's Patagonian lakes. This cold-water fish is characterized by its vibrant silver-blue coloration, black spots, and distinctive red stripe along its lateral line. A highly prized game fish, the Lake Trout is known for its strong fighting ability and delicious taste. This stunning engraving not only serves as a testament to the artistic mastery of Pretre and his collaborators, but also highlights the natural beauty and diversity of Argentina's aquatic ecosystems.
