The Army and Navy Club, Pall Mall

The Army and Navy Club which overlooks Pall Mall to the south and Sr. Jamess to the east, and was recently pulled down in order that a more capacious building should be completed by 1963. The club was founded in 1837 when many army officers returned from India and, finding the waiting-list for the Junior United Service Club so long, decided to form an Army Club. The Duke of Wellington refused to be patron unless the navy was also included, hence it became The Army and Navy Club. Date: 1962

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the grandeur and history of The Army and Navy Club, located on Pall Mall in London, as it stood in 1962 before its demolition. Overlooking Pall Mall to the south and St. James to the east, the imposing building was a symbol of British society's rich military tradition. Founded in 1837, The Army and Navy Club was established when many army officers returned from India and discovered the waiting list for the Junior United Service Club to be excessively long. The Duke of Wellington, a renowned military leader and statesman, refused to be the patron unless the navy was also included, thereby giving birth to The Army and Navy Club. The club's interiors were a testament to the wealth and grandeur of the era, with ornate furnishings, dark wood paneling, and elegant décor. Membership was limited to those who had served in the military or held a military rank, making it an exclusive and prestigious social institution. This photograph, taken in 1962, offers a glimpse into the past, capturing the essence of a bygone era. The club, which had stood since the 1850s, was soon to be demolished to make way for a more capacious building. Today, the history and traditions of The Army and Navy Club continue to be celebrated, as its legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of those who were fortunate enough to be a part of its storied past.
