Augusta Empress Holstein Kaiser Medals Pearls Sash Schleswig Strings Viktoria Wilhelm

EDITORS COMMENTS
Augusta Viktoria of Schleswig-Holstein, born on October 22, 1858, was the first wife of Kaiser Wilhelm II, the German Emperor. In this photograph taken around 1905, Augusta Viktoria is depicted in her regal attire as the Empress Consort of Germany. She wears a grand sash adorned with the Order of the Star of the Double-Headed Eagle, one of the most prestigious orders in the German Empire. The sash is fastened with a large star and a golden eagle brooch. Augusta Viktoria's elegant hat is bedecked with pearls and other precious stones, reflecting her high status. The pearls cascade down the hat's brim, while the strings of pearls around her neck add to her opulent appearance. The medals on her chest signify her various titles and roles, including the Grand Cross of the Order of the Red Eagle and the Grand Cross of the Order of Louise. Augusta Viktoria's marriage to Wilhelm II took place on January 27, 1881, in the Chapel of the Palace of Charlottenlund in Denmark. Their union produced seven children, including the future Kaiser Wilhelm III. However, their marriage was marked by numerous conflicts and misunderstandings, eventually leading to their separation in 1901. Despite the challenges, Augusta Viktoria remained an influential figure in the German court until her death on October 14, 1921. This photograph is a testament to Augusta Viktoria's status as the Empress Consort of Germany and her role in the history of the German Empire during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
