1. Title: "Benedict XIII (Pedro de Luna): The Controversial Antipope" This exquisite polychrome wood sculpture depicts Pedro de Luna, better known as Benedict XIII, the controversial antipope of the 16th century. Born in Spain, Pedro de Luna rose to power amidst the tumultuous period of the Great Schism in the Catholic Church, which saw three popes claiming the papal throne between 1378 and 1417. The intricately carved detail of this Spanish-Flemish style sculpture reveals a mature, regal figure dressed in papal attire, with an expression of solemnity and authority. The antipope's right hand is raised in blessing, while his left hand holds a pastoral staff, symbolizing his spiritual and temporal power. The richly colored polychrome finish adds depth and texture to the sculpture, making the figure appear lifelike and imposing. Benedict XIII's reign as antipope lasted from 1411 to 1417, during which he attempted to assert his claim to the papacy against the recognized pope, Martin V. The antipapacy was a divisive period in the history of the Catholic Church, and Benedict XIII's election was not recognized by many European powers. Despite this, he continued to rule from his stronghold in Avignon, France, and even issued bulls and dispensations during his tenure. This sculpture, now housed in the Frederic Mares Museum in Barcelona, Spain, is a testament to the complex and fascinating history of the Catholic Church during the late Middle Ages. The intricate detail and masterful craftsmanship of the piece serve to capture the essence of a man who, while controversial in his time, continues to intrigue scholars and history enthusiasts today.
