Benjamin Grierson

EDITORS COMMENTS
Militarian and Union hero, Major General Benjamin H. Grierson, is depicted in this striking head-and-shoulders portrait. Born on February 24, 1826, in Port Gibson, Mississippi, Grierson rose to prominence during the American Civil War for his daring raids behind enemy lines. Before the war, Grierson served as a professor of mathematics and engineering at the United States Military Academy at West Point. When the conflict began, he resigned his commission and joined the Union Army. In 1862, he was appointed as a brigadier general and given command of the 16th Army Corps. Grierson is best known for leading a successful raid from Holly Springs, Mississippi, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in April 1863. The operation, which came to be known as "Grierson's Raid," disrupted Confederate communications and supply lines, allowing Union forces to advance on Vicksburg. The success of the mission earned Grierson the nickname "The Gray Ghost." After the Civil War, Grierson returned to civilian life and became a successful businessman and inventor. He held various positions in the railroad industry and was granted a patent for a refrigerator car design. Grierson passed away on July 12, 1911, in New York City. This photograph of Major General Benjamin H. Grierson was taken between 1861 and 1865, during the height of his military career. The image captures the intensity and determination of a man who played a crucial role in turning the tide of the Civil War in favor of the Union. The portrait is a testament to Grierson's leadership and bravery, making it an essential addition to any collection of American military history.
