EDITORS COMMENTS
Bonzo's Bath Night: As the evening approaches and the thought of a bath looms, Bonzo, the beloved small dog creation of George Ernest Studdy, grows increasingly nervous. His saucer-like eyes widen with each passing moment, and he jumps at every little sound. The once playful and carefree Bonzo is now on edge, anticipating the inevitable routine that lies ahead. George Studdy first introduced Bonzo to the world in 1922 through his illustrations in The Sketch, and the Bonzo craze that ensued was nothing short of phenomenal. Bonzo's popularity reached new heights, resulting in an abundance of merchandise including postcards, annuals, toys, and more. This charming illustration, dated February 28, 1923, captures Bonzo's anxious anticipation of bath time. The scene is set in the comfort of his own home, with a post or letter lying on the floor and a telephone ringing in the background. The sound of a bird in a cage tweeting, the kettle whistling, and the ringing telephone all contribute to Bonzo's growing unease. Despite his nerves, Bonzo can be seen in the tub, surrounded by essentials for his bathing ritual - a bar of soap, a comb, and a scrubbing brush. The bathwater steams up the room, adding to the cozy atmosphere. Bonzo's expression, however, remains one of trepidation as he braces himself for the impending bath. This delightful illustration, created by George Ernest Studdy, is a testament to the enduring charm of Bonzo and the nostalgia of the 1920s.
