EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the Boxer Rebellion, a significant event in world history that took place in China from 1898 to 1901. The image depicts British troops, part of the multinational military force known as the Eight-Nation Alliance, taking up defensive positions during the Battle of Tientsin on July 13th and 14th, 1900. The city of Tientsin (Pinyin: Tianjin) had been besieged by the Chinese Imperial Army and the Boxers, a secret society that sought to drive out foreign influences from China. The foreign population in the city, including diplomats, missionaries, and merchants, were under siege and in grave danger. The Eight-Nation Alliance, comprised of Austria-Hungary, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom, assembled to rescue the besieged population and restore order. In this photograph, British soldiers are seen taking up positions in a trench, their bedrolls and equipment at the ready. The soldiers' determined expressions and the ominous smoke rising in the background underscore the intensity of the battle. The victory at the Battle of Tientsin marked a turning point in the Boxer Rebellion, as the alliance successfully lifted the siege and went on to defeat the Chinese Imperial Army and the Boxers in other engagements. The event ultimately led to the signing of the Boxer Protocol, which forced China to pay reparations and accept foreign influence in its government and military.
