EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a print from Plate 109 of the John Reeves Collection of Zoological Drawings from Canton, China, dating back to the nineteenth century. The plate features a detailed illustration of the Banded Krait, scientifically known as Bungarus fasciatus, a venomous snake native to Asia. The Banded Krait, also known as the Asian Krait, is a member of the Elapidae family and the suborder Serpentes, which belongs to the larger group of Reptiles known as Diapsida, Lepidosauria. This elapid snake is renowned for its distinctive banded pattern, earning it the common name 'Banded Krait.' The illustration showcases two Banded Kraits in an intriguing pose, with their bodies curled and coiled, displaying the beautiful pattern of their scales. The top snake's head is raised, as if ready to strike, while the lower snake's head is turned towards its partner, possibly indicating mating behavior. John Reeves, a British merchant and naturalist, created this collection of zoological drawings during his time in China from 1774 to 1856. Reeves' work was significant in documenting the rich biodiversity of China during this period. This plate, in particular, is an excellent example of the meticulous attention to detail and accuracy that characterized Reeves' work. The Banded Krait is a highly venomous snake, and its bite can be fatal to humans. Despite this, it plays a crucial role in controlling rodent populations in its habitat. The intrigue and fascination surrounding this snake, as well as the historical significance of this plate, make it an essential addition to any collection of natural history or zoological art.
