EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate engraving depicts Captain Franklin's Eutoca, also known as Franklin's Scorpionweed (Phacelia franklinii), a rare and beautiful plant discovered by the renowned English explorer, Captain Francis Parkinson Franklin (1771-1840). The illustration was drawn by the esteemed botanical artist, William Jackson Hooker (1785-1865), and expertly engraved by Swan. It was first published in The Botanical Magazine, under the direction of Samuel Curtis, in 1830. Captain Franklin was an accomplished botanist and navigator, who explored the western United States during the early 19th century. He made significant contributions to the scientific community by discovering numerous new plant species, many of which were unique to the region. The discovery of Phacelia franklinii, with its distinctive scorpion-like appearance, was particularly noteworthy. The plant is depicted in full bloom, with its vibrant blue-purple flowers and intricately detailed stems and leaves. The engraving provides a detailed and accurate representation of the plant, which was essential for botanical research and classification during this period. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of the handcoloring further enhance the beauty and accuracy of the illustration. This historical artwork is a testament to the importance of exploration and scientific discovery in the 19th century. It also showcases the remarkable skill and artistry of the botanical illustrators and engravers of the time, who played a crucial role in documenting and preserving the natural world for future generations.
