Captain Liddell V. C. WW1

Captain John Aidan Liddell of 3rd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and the Royal Flying Corps who won the Victoria Cross after safely flying and landing his reconnaissance plane despite suffering severe wounds half an hour earlier. Pictured here being helped out of his plane after landing. On 31 July 1915, while flying reconnaissance over Ostend-Bruges-Ghent, Belgium, Liddell was severely wounded in his right thigh. This caused momentary unconsciousness, but by great effort he recovered partial control of his machine when it had dropped nearly 3, 000 feet and succeeded, although fired on, in completing the course and brought the plane back into the Allied lines. The control wheel and throttle control were smashed as was part of the undercarriage and cockpit, but the machine and life of the observer were saved. Liddell died of his wounds a month later at De Panne, Flanders, Belgium, on 31 August 1915, aged 27. Date: 1915

Aidan Airman Airmen Corps Liddell Pilot Recipient Reconnaissance

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the moment of bravery and resilience displayed by Captain John Aidan Liddell, VC, of the 3rd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and the Royal Flying Corps, as he is helped out of his severely damaged reconnaissance plane after safely landing it on 31 July 1915. During the flight over Ostend-Bruges-Ghent in Belgium, Liddell was severely wounded in his right thigh, causing momentary unconsciousness. But with great determination, he managed to regain control of the machine, which had dropped nearly 3,000 feet, and brought it back into the Allied lines despite being fired upon. Tragically, Liddell succumbed to his wounds a month later on 31 August 1915, at the age of 27, in De Panne, Flanders, Belgium. Captain Liddell's heroic actions earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valor in the face of the enemy. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the incredible courage and sacrifice displayed by airmen during World War I, particularly those of the Royal Flying Corps. The control wheel, throttle control, and part of the undercarriage and cockpit were all damaged in the harrowing encounter, but Liddell's quick thinking and determination ensured the survival of both himself and his observer. This photograph is a testament to the unwavering bravery and resilience of those who served during the Great War.
