EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 18th century oil on canvas painting depicts the pivotal moment of the Battle of Arbela, also known as the Battle of Gaugamela, which took place in 331 BC. The painting, based on a work by the renowned Italian Baroque artist Pietro da Cortona, captures the decisive encounter between the Greek commander, Alexander the Great, and the Persian King Darius III. Alexander, depicted on the left, is shown approaching the Persian forces on his horse, his determined expression and raised hand signaling his intent to engage in battle. Darius, in turn, is shown turning to flee in his chariot, acknowledging the inevitable outcome of the confrontation. The painting masterfully conveys the grandeur and scale of the clash between these two great ancient civilizations, with the vast landscape of the battlefield stretching out behind them. The Battle of Arbela marked a turning point in the history of the ancient world, as Alexander's victory allowed him to expand his empire to include the Persian territories. This painting, which is part of the collection at the St. Fernando Royal Academy Museum in Madrid, Spain, provides a fascinating glimpse into the past and the epic struggles that shaped the course of history.
